Highway Cleanup Rescheduled

Our club has rescheduled the 383 Highway Cleanup between Foxy’s and Wheatland Center Road for next Tuesday, May 3rd at 5:00 PM. Again, weather permitting. But, hey, April will be over and May will be dryer and more like the Spring we all love. So, if you see us along the road, give a honk and say hello.

Well, due to the thunderstorms, we had to cancel our road cleanup. It will be rescheduled, so watch for us out on the road. We all love this community and enjoy keeping our little stretch of road “picked up” for all of you!

This evening (April 25th), weather permitting, we will be walking Highway 383 between Foxy’s and Wheatland Center Road picking up trash along the side of the road. This is one of our community service projects. Honk your horn to say hello as you drive by.

Here is our restored 1961 original International Cub Cadet tractor. Ain’t she a beauty!!!! The club will be selling raffle tickets. Be sure to get yours. Contact any Rotarian for tickets. Great Meetings, Interesting Programs

Last night (April 12th) was another great night at Scottsville Rotary. We always have a great time … the best food ever, fellowship beyond compare, and such interesting programs … not to mention the charitable work our club and Rotary International worldwide does to enhance the lives of others in our community and in our world, which adds to our commitment to world peace and understanding.

Our program last night was on the MicroBrewery at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. Our program speaker was Chuck LeCount from the Village Museum. He gave us a complete, albeit brief as it needed to be, of brewing and the Walter Grieves Brewery at the Village Museum. It was sooooooo interesting.

We have programs like this at every meeting in addition to the good food, fellowship, and good works. We’d love to have you join us. We meet at 6:15PM on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month at the Genesee Country Inn in Caledonia. You’ll be glad you did!!!

The Scottsville Rotary Club is busy preparing for three important fundraisers. Fundraising is how we are able to support worthy, charitable projects in our schools, community, and beyond.

We are in the process of restoring a 1961 International Cub Cadet tractor. This model was the first year the Cub Cadet was produced. The pieces have all been located, sanded, and now at Caledonia Diesel being painted. By the end of this first week of March, the tractor will be restored and ready to show. Our club will be selling raffle tickets through the summer ending at the Alexander Gas & Steam show the first week in September. July 17th will be the Gordie Howe Memorial Golf Tournament to be held at the Wildwood Country Club in Rush. We’re looking for golfers. You can gather your own foursome or we’ll put you in with other that are signing up as individuals. For more information, contact Richard Nereau (346-7384 or 490-5789).

The Scottsville Summerfest will be August 20th. Nice to think about summer after the winter we’re experiencing. The Scottsville Rotary Club is taking over the organizational management of the Summerfest with assistance from the Village of Scottsville. We had a great program at our Rotary meeting this evening. Eileen Hansen joined us from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Scottsville. She spoke to us about a comfort care home that will be housed on the second floor of the St. Mary’s rectory. Plans are underway but there is still much to do. Renovation of the second floor will take approximately $170,000 and then the comfort care home will need to be funded at approximately $120,000 per year. The facility will have two “comfort care” rooms and the plans are amazing.

There is much fundraising to be accomplished and many volunteers are and will be needed. This is a wonderful project. Keep it in your prayers and help where you can.

Another Groundhog Dinner Success

Friday evening the Scottsville Rotary Club and the Scottsville Lions Club joined efforts to put on another successful groundhog dinner, the 9th annual dinner. The meal is always delicious and the homemade desserts fantastic. We serve baked ham, scalloped potatoes, mixed vegetables and a garden salad. After your meal, our student helpers bring around a dessert cart for your personal selection. Always a hit!!!

This event raises funds for the Wheatland Assets Initiative and the Wheatland Chili Interact Club. Two great local youth programs. The students from these organizations work very hard during the evening setting up and serving the meal. We and they hope that next year will be our biggest turnout ever and that it continues to grow every year. It’s a great meal raising funds for great youth programs.

Industry Tutoring and Mentoring Project

Changing the Future: One Student at a Time, is the motto for the tutoring/mentoring project at the State School at Industry. Authored in 2009, by the Rotary Club of Scottsville and volunteers from Rush UMC, it focuses on working with residents of the school to improve their skills in math, reading comprehension, social studies and writing.

A study released in 2009 showed that many incarcerated individuals would revert back to crime upon their release because they could not read or write well enough to fill out an employment application. They also lacked the skills to follow written instructions after being employed.

Through the efforts of Chaplain Buzz Grimm, we met with Industry officials to map a strategy using volunteers to fill this need. It was felt volunteers would be best used in the classroom and to work one/one with boys who showed an interest in improving their learning skills. We started with eight volunteers and added others throughout the year to a total of 18.

In addition, elective (evening) programs were initiated in culinary, music, arts and crafts, computer science and small engine repair. A volunteer came forth to offer a special 2 hour weekly class in basic finance. The electives are offered to boys who maintain a clean record while at the school and show an interest in expanding their interests.

Volunteers were asked to donate one hour per week using their skills in the related subjects. Today, we have several that arrive at 8:00 a.m. and do not leave until the end of the morning session. They assist the teacher in the classroom and also work one/one with a student during a free period.

During the initial year, computers were donated (for the evening elective), the greenhouse was cleaned and product inventoried and books and art supplies were donated for their use.

Rotary Plans

Last evening several of the Scottsville Rotarians met at The Diner to discuss and plan for several upcoming events. Of course, this Friday’s Groundhog Dinner was first on the list, and everything is in place for a great meal. We are hoping the weather cooperates. 4:30 to 7:30 at the WCHS cafeteria. SEE YOU THERE!

Dave McGaffick updated us on the International Cub Cadet tractor restoration. He believes the restoration will be complete the first week in March. For all tractor collectors, this will be a great auction. Tickets will go on sale, and as of now the price per ticket is believed to be $2.00. The tractor should be worth a few thousand dollars … such a deal! The drawing will be in September.

The planning for the Gordon Howe Memorial Golf Tournament, set for July 17, is coming along nicely. This, too, will be a great event. Gather up a foursome and join us. We do a first class tournament.

The Scottsville Rotary Summerfest plans are coming together as well. The Summerfest is set for August 20th and we are planning on some added features to make this a true family oriented day. Keep tuned for more information on this. We hope to see everyone out that day for a great festival.

We are excited about these upcoming events. As you know, fundraising is important to a service club, that’s how we fund the many good causes we support, both locally and internationally. We look forward to you support!
