Paulsen Baker Garvey Benefit Concert A Success

October 23, 2010

Last night’s concert was a lot of fun and fairly well attended.  Of course, we would love to have seen the auditorium full to overflowing, but everyone that came had such a good time.  Good music, great entertainment, and also featured Scottsville’s own Carol Mulligan.  The concert was to raise funds for the Scottsville Library, the WCHS drama club, and Scottsville Rotary.  If you missed it, we’re sorry.  If you joined us, thank you for your support.  It was fun.  My favorite part was hearing the high school students crack up at one of the songs … “I Just Don’t Look Good Naked Anymore.”  It was fun!!!!  A big thank you to Paulsen Baker & Garvey and Carol Mulligan for sharing their talents with us.

The Final Inch

October 21, 2010

Last night I (Diana Balch) went to see the film titled, “The Final Inch.” This was hosted by the Deaf Rotary Club of Rochester. It was a great documentary about the worldwide polio eradication efforts. Rotary began this campaign in 1987 and has joined with other worldwide organizations such as the World Health Organization and UNICEF to remove this horrible disease from our world and its people. It is down to only four countries, India, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and is greatly reduced even there. This documentary took us to a very underdeveloped region of India to show us the tragic effects of this disease and the tireless efforts to control and eradicate it. Very moving and informative!!! Bill Gates has pledged $355 million to Rotary and Rotary is to match with $200 million. We are so close … this truly is “The Final Inch.”  RI President Ray Klingensmith asks us if “we are our brother’s keeper.”  He believes that Rotarians believe we are.  As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.
